Cynthia is the co-founder of the New Rural Project
Cynthia Wallace is the co-founder of the New Rural Project, a nonprofit focused on ensuring the voices of rural youth and marginalized residents are heard. Prior to starting the New Rural Project, she spent 25 years in the financial services industry, where she specialized in risk management and regulation, before retiring from GE Capital, where she served as Vice President, Credit Acquisitions Insight Leader.
Cynthia has been active in North Carolina politics since 2008, and was the 2020 Democratic Nominee for the state’s 9th Congressional District. She also chaired the 9th Congressional District of the North Carolina Democratic Party beginning in January 2017, where she led an eight-county strategy.
Cynthia was recently appointed to the North Carolina State Banking Commission by Gov. Roy Cooper and was elected to the boards of Democracy North Carolina and the Levine Museum of the New South. She has been a member of the Park Church South Charlotte for over 14 years and has been actively engaged for more than 12 years there with her small Life Group of caring women. She is also a member of the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan Strategic Advisors.
Cynthia credits her late father, a civil rights activist and the first African American elected to Georgia’s Effingham County Commission, with her passion for civic engagement. She has two sisters and one brother and frequently visits her family, including her mother, in and near the small southern Georgia town where she grew up.
Cynthia, a native of Springfield, GA, has lived in Charlotte since 2006.
